Current Situation In Zimbabwe As Mugabe Is Granted Immunity And Protection

zim1

Embattled Ex Zimbabwe President, Robert Mugabe has been granted immunity from prosecution in a deal he brokered which saw him resign as Zimbabwe president after 37 years.

Mugabe has also been assured of his safety and protection in Zimbabwe, despite rumours that he and his wife Grace were planning to flee.

Sources close to the resignation negotiations who spoke to Reuters had this to say: “It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it,” said the source, who is not authorised to speak on the details of the negotiated settlement.

“For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country…although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to.”

Zimbabweans however have not found the news well following decades of Mugabe’s brutal leadership, during which he has been accused of widespread corruption, racial discrimination, crimes against humanity, human rights abuses, suppression of political critics and economic mismanagement.

Millions of people across the country are still celebrating the end of Mugabe’s presidency, which has birthed new hope into a country that has spent years suffering under his long leadership.
