Ignorance Is Not Always An Excuse For Racial Bias – Prince Harry

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry has come out to say that his upbringing as a royal made him unaware of unconscious racial bias.

He, however, revealed that being married to his mixed-race wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has changed all of that.

According to him, no one can be criticized for showing their unconscious bias, but as soon as humans realize that it exists, it is our duty to educate ourselves since ignorance can no longer be an excuse.

He added that it is a bad thing for people in power to be unaware of the culture within their system because progress cannot be made when that is the case.

His words, “Unconscious bias, from my understanding, having the upbringing and the education that I had, I had no idea what it was. I had no idea it existed,”

“And then, sad as it is to say, it took me many, many years to realize it, especially then living a day or a week in my wife’s shoes.”

“And I think one of the most dangerous things is people within positions of power, whether it’s politics or whether it’s the media, where if you’re not aware of your own bias and you’re not aware of the culture within your system, then how are we ever going to progress?”

“It’s going to take every single one of us to really change things and anyone that’s pushing against it really needs to take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror,”

“This is a global movement. The train has left the station. If you’re not on it now, then get on it because there’s so much that we can do. And being a dad myself, the whole point in life, I guess, for me, is to try to leave the world in a better place than when you found it.”

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is a member of the British royal family. He is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales and is sixth in the line of succession to the British throne.

Harry was educated at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. He spent parts of his gap year in Australia and Lesotho.

He then underwent officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a cornet into the Blues and Royals, serving temporarily with his brother Prince William, and he completed his training as a troop leader. In 2007–08, he served for over ten weeks in Helmand, Afghanistan.

He returned to Afghanistan for a 20-week deployment in 2012–13 with the Army Air Corps. He left the army in June 2015.
