Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has agreed to take over the same role at Bayern Munich starting in the summer, according to the Champions League’s official Twitter feed. The club confirmed the move.
Guardiola left Barca last summer after four extremely successful seasons, which saw the Spanish boss win 14 titles with the La Liga giants. Now he’ll attempt to replicate that run of dominance in the Bundesliga.
The 41-year-old former midfielder will inherit a familiar task with Bayern. He must take a squad that’s riddled with superstars and get them to play as a single, unstoppable unit. As always, that’s a lot easier said than done.
Guardiola will replace Jupp Heynckes, who’s currently in his third stint as manager of the German side and led the club to the Champions League final last season. The team’s strong run of form makes it an intriguing switch.
That said, it’s impossible to deny Guardiola’s star power and track record. Bayern must strongly believe he’s the manager who can make the club an even bigger powerhouse in the coming years.
With players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Muller leading the way, the pieces are definitely in place for a German dynasty and plenty of European success. But, it certainly puts a lot of pressure on Guardiola’s shoulders.
Having him take over in the summer should help ease the transition for both him and the club, but expectations are going to be through the roof leading into next season.
Guardiola can handle the challenge.
