A mild drama occurred on Wednesday, when security personnel attached to Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Senator Chris Anyanwu, representing Imo East senatorial district, engaged each other in an assault that caused security breach” on both personalities.
While the governor claimed that his convoy was assaulted by the senator along Owerri-Umuahia road at about 8p.m. on the very day, Anyanwu expressed shock that such act of barbarism could be exhibited by the members of governor’s convoy allegedly on the instruction of the governor.
Though the two leaders are members of the All Progressives Grand alliance (APGA) non of them could actually disclose what the problem between them is.
Anyanwu on her part, told THISDAY that the incident occurred while she was returning from her village to Owerri, where she has gone to address her supporters.
She recalled that what she noticed was that a convoy without any trace of being that of the governors’ convoy without the coat of arms, or flags, and no riders was to be overtaken by her convoy.
Anyanwu said after overtaking, she realised that there was an attack on her drivers and security by security details in the other convoy.
Anyanwu told THISDAY that on noticing that the convoy was that of the governor and that her two drivers and some security personnel were pummeled by the governors’ security detail on the orders of the governor, she alighted from her vehicle bare-footed with the intention to let them know that she was the one.
She alleged that what marvelled her most was that she saw the governor dishing out instructions that her security should be disarmed.
According to her, I went to pay a Christmas visit on the governor this morning and tried to find out from him if there was any assistance I could render over the governor’s daughter’s traditional wedding and I told the governor that I was home-bound to see my people.”
However, the statement from the Special Assistant on Print Media to the Governor, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa, said the governor narrowly escaped death when the convoy of Senator Chris Anyanwu, rammed into his convoy.
According to the statement, the governor was returning from Ihitte-Uboma, after an official assignment, when the incident took place at Azaraegbelu, Owerri North Local Government Area, along Owerri/Umuahia expressway.
The senator’s vehicles suddenly rammed into the governor’s convoy close to the staff car cutting off the lead security vehicle after overtaking dangerously and in a very suspicious manner. That incident posed a serious security threat forcing security men in the governor’s convoy into gallant struggle to shield the governor from any possible attack before the vehicles were finally displaced from the convoy,” the statement stated.
He stated that Anaynwu, who no doubt knew the convoy was that of the governor, alighted from her car and ordered his Naval Security personnel to open fire, alleging further that the Senator further descended on the security men slapping both the governor’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC) and Chief Detail.
She also rained abuses on the governor as well as calling him unprintable names.
Okorocha recently banned the use of siren by unauthorised persons in the state as part of the security measures to fight crime.
