Popular Telegram owner, Pavel Durov has been charged with allowing criminal activity on his message app.

He was recently barred from leaving France pending further investigation, and the world has been reacting.

Durov was released yesterday after four days of questioning, and he was ordered to pay 5 million euros bail plus report to a police station twice a week.

His arrest in France has caused outrage in Russia, with some government officials calling it politically motivated and proof of the West’s double standard on freedom of speech.

Pavel Valeryevich Durov is a Russian business executive and entrepreneur.

Along with his brother Nikolai Durov, he founded the social network VK in 2006, which quickly became the most popular social network in Russia. In 2014, after a conflict with the new owners of the company and pressure from the Russian authorities, Durov resigned as CEO of VK and left Russia.

Pavel Durov’s grandfather Semyon Petrovich Tulyakov fought in World War II. He served in the 65th Infantry Division of the Soviet Red Army, participated in battles on the Leningrad Front at Krasnoborsky and Gatchinsky, and was wounded three times, receiving the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd degree, and on the 40th Victory Day, the Order of the Great Patriotic War 1st degree.

Pavel Durov was born on 10 October 1984 in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, but spent most of his childhood in Turin, Italy, where his father was employed.
