Pope Francis joins Instagram a year after opening his own Twitter account

Pope Francis has set up an account on Instagram after his success on Twitter.

The pontiff has more than 3 million followers on Twitter – and so far he has 5,852 fans on photo sharing site Instagram.

Photos posted on the site show the leader of the Catholic Church meeting the faithful and leading prayers.

The Vatican also has a profile on Instagram, which has 2,763 followers.

News of the account emerged as the pontiff visited the town of Assisi in Italy to pray at the shrine of Saint Francis, whose name he took when he was elected pope.
