The Telecoms Sector Is An Enabler To Other Sectors In Nigeria – Prof. Umar Danbatta

The Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta has come out to say that the telcom industry has been positioned to drive the economic diversification plan of the Federal government.

Prof. Danbatta recently revealed this in his presentation to Course 29 Participants at the National Defence College, Nigeria.

According to him, the telecoms sector is the life-wire that will drive the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) of the Federal Government, and it also plays a dual role of contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He added that the fact that telecommunications is also an enabler to other sectors of the economy makes it very important to our country.

His words, β€œTelecommunications is key to the diversification of the Nigerian economy, as the telecom sector played a dual role of contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and being an enabler to other sectors of the economy.”

Umar Garba Danbatta, is a Nigerian author, philanthropist, administrator and professor of electrical, telecommunications engineer. He is the executive vice-chairman and chief executive Officer of Nigerian Communications Commission since November 2015 to April 2020 and was reappointed in July 2020 by the confirmation from the Senate house.

Prior to his appointment, he has been acting vice-chancellor of Kano State University of Science and Technology since its establishment in 2001 and became acting vice-chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission in August 2014.

He was born in Danbatta in Kano State. He earned his Bachelor’s and master of sciences and engineering from the Technical University of Wroclaw and holds a PhD of science and technology from the University of Manchester.

He has authored several books, and has been credited in more than 50 articles in journals. He also has received many awards and honors.
